Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
The majority of Americans have some type of investment portfolio, whether it be stocks and bonds, a 401K, or a company retirement plan. Most of us also spend a large portion of our income on real estate, mortgaging our future income to acquire a comfortable place to live. And while there’s nothing morally wrong with having a nice house or a good retirement plan, the question remains whether this is the best investment of the money with which God has blessed us. After all, stock prices rise and fall, houses eventually wear out, and in the end we don’t get to keep any of it beyond the grave.
Jesus offers us a better plan for investing our riches. Invest in that which has lasting value. Invest in His kingdom. This means donating money to those individuals, churches, and ministries that are proving effective at advancing the message and impact of the gospel to their community. Are you making that kind of investment?
